I LOVE MY FAMILY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE: MR. CHARLES ROY SANDERS, PART 4

BELOW IS THE PART 4 OF MY BIRTHDAY POST TO CHARLES AS A REMINDER...I WILL RE-POST PART 5, TOO....THEN, I WILL BEGIN PART 6

PLEASE JOIN ME IN TRIBUTE TO CHARLES ROY SANDERS
AND
TO OUR ALMA MATER, L.C. ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL

CHARLES AND I ENTERED L.C. ANDERSON HIGH BASICALLY AWARE OF THE RECENT ATHLETIC HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL...LIKE MOST AFRICAN-AMERICANS IN AUSTIN, OUR FAMILIES HAD PARTICIPATED WITH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES FOR YEARS PRIOR TO ACTUALLY ATTENDING ANDERSON...WE HAD BEEN AT THE SOCIAL ACTIVITIES; INCLUDING ALL THE SPORTS ACTIVITIES...MY FAMILY DIDN'T MISS HARDLY ANY ANDERSON SPORTS ACTIVITY...WE MADE IT TO ALL FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, AND TRACK ACTIVITIES, FOR SURE!  ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL WAS ONE OF THE MAIN "CENTERS OF THE SOCIAL LIFE IN EAST AUSTIN"...WHEN THE BAND WAS PLAYING AT THE FOOTBALL GAMES; YOU COULD HEAR IT ECHO IN THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY....THE ROSEWOOD PROJECTS WAS JUST ACROSS THE STREET...SO, ANDERSON WAS SITUATED BASICALLY IN THE "CENTER" OF THE COMMUNITY.

SO, CHARLES WAS SURELY PROUD TO JOIN HIS FELLOW TEAMMATES ON THIS HISTORIC ANDERSON HIGH YELLOWJACKET FOOTBALL FIELD...

CHARLES IS SHOWN BELOW IN A YEARBOOK PICTURE SHOWING HIM PLAYING CENTER...AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT POSITION...HE WAS TRUSTED TO BEGIN THE PLAY...IF HE DIDN'T DO HIS JOB RIGHT, BERTRAM LEWIS, OUR QUARTERBACK, WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO HIS JOB...

SO, CHARLES WAS, OBVIOUSLY, A RESPECTED PLAYER ON THE TEAM...IN FACT, HE WAS LATER CHOSEN AS "CAPTAIN" OF THE TEAM!!  IRONICALLY, HIS BECOMING CAPTAIN OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM LED TO OUR FIRST REAL CONTACT...WHY???...BECAUSE, I HAD BECOME "CAPTAIN" OF THE CHEERLEADERS!!  SO, WHY DOES THAT MATTER?  WELL, THERE WAS A TRADITION AT ANDERSON WHICH WENT LIKE THIS....FIRST, THE CHEERLEADERS CREATED A HUGE SIGN MADE OF PAPER STRETCHED ACROSS TWO LONG POLES WHICH WAS DECORATED WITH PICTURES AND WORDS ABOUT THE GAME...SECOND, BEFORE EACH GAME, THE CROWD WOULD COME IN TO SEE THE BAND, THE JACKETTES DANCE TEAM AND THE CHEERLEADERS ALREADY THERE ENTERTAINING THE FULL STADIUM CROWDS....THIRD, WHEN IT WAS TIME FOR THE TEAM TO COME OUT,  THE TEAM CAPTAIN LED THEM OUT...AS CHEERLEADER CAPTAIN, IT WAS MY JOB TO GRAB THE CAPTAIN'S HAND AND LEAD HIM AND THE TEAM BURSTING THROUGH THE HUGE SIGN ONTO THE FIELD; AS THE WHOLE STADIUM SHOOK WITH THE ROAR OF THE CROWD....BUT, THE TEAM HAD ON HELMETS...NOT ONCE DID I EVEN PAY ATTENTION TO WHO HE WAS...TO ME, HE WAS JUST THE CAPTAIN WHOSE HAND I HAD TO PHYSICALLY TAKE AS WE BOTH RAN TO LEAD OUR "SQUADS" ONTO THE FIELD...I NEVER REALIZED IT WAS THE YOUNG MAN I WOULD LATER JOIN HANDS TO MARRY...

NOTE: IN THE LOWER LEFT CORNER, CHARLES' TEAMMATE AND OUR "FAMOUS" CLASSMATE, (#42) THOMAS "HOLLYWOOD" HENDERSON, WHO LATER GAINED FAME AS AN OUTSTANDING DALLAS COWBOYS FOOTBALL PLAYER, IS SHOWN....THOMAS WAS A COOL DUDE THEN...AS HE IS NOW...IF YOU LOOK CLOSER AT THE STADIUM PICTURE, YOU WILL SEE THAT IT NOTES THAT AN EASTSIDE ORGANIZATION,  ALONG WITH THE ENCOURAGEMENT AND MARKETING  OF  (T.H.H) THOMAS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR  INVESTING TIME AND MONEY IN RESTORING OUR OLD ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FIELD AND STADIUM AND PROVIDING IT FOR USE OF THE CURRENT EAST AUSTIN COMMUNITY FOR DIFFERENT EVENTS.  I JUST WANT TO GIVE RECOGNITION TO AND THANK THOMAS FOR HIS GENEROUS, INSPIRATIONAL, HONORABLE, AND AMAZING DISPLAY OF "ANDERSON YELLOWJACKET" AURA AND AWESOME AUSTIN HOMETOWN SPIRIT...THANKS, THOMAS!!!!

ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL HAD ALWAYS BEEN PART OF THE "HEARTBEAT" OF OUR COMMUNITY LIFE IN EAST AUSTIN!!  IN OTHER WORDS, IN MY OPINION, ANDERSON WAS SECOND ONLY TO OUR CHURCHES IN IMPORTANCE AND IMPACT IN OUR YOUNG LIVES!

BUT, WE CERTAINLY WERE NOT AWARE OF THE INSPIRATIONAL AND AWESOME HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL; INCLUDING, IT'S AMAZING ATHLETIC HISTORY...THE L.C. ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL YELLOWJACKETS WAS THE SCHOOL ALL AFRICAN-AMERICANS BORN IN AUSTIN HAD TO ATTEND; BUT, WE WOULDN'T HAVE HAD IT ANY OTHER WAY.  WE WERE SURROUNDED BY AN ADMINISTRATION, STAFF AND FACULTY WHO KNEW THEY WERE PREPARING US FOR AN AMAZING FUTURE; AND, THEY DID THEIR JOBS; NOT JUST OUT OF PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY; BUT, OUT OF SINCERE FEELINGS OF LOVE FOR EACH OF US...THAT'S A POWERFUL FOUNDATION UPON WHICH OUR "ANDERSON AURA" WAS BUILT....BOTH IN ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS, WE EXCELLED!

NOW, WE KNOW THAT ANDERSON WAS A "SUPERSTAR SCHOOL" WITH SUPERSTAR ATHLETES WHO HAVE FINALLY BEEN RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS WHICH CONTINUE TO ADD TO THE LEGENDARY TEXAS SPORTS HISTORY FILES...AS NOTED IN POST #3: "Austin High and L.C. Anderson High had “the best two teams in the state” in the late 1950s. “They never got to play,” he says, “and they were right across town.” In addition to its 1942 title, Anderson’s football team won the Prairie View Interscholastic League championship in 1956, 1957 and 1961."

WE DID KNOW, HOWEVER, THAT ANDERSON WAS RESPECTED AROUND THE DISTRICT, EVEN THOUGH, IT WAS AN "ALL-BLACK" SCHOOL.  WE WERE SHOWING OUR EMPHASIS ON ACADEMICS IN UIL COMPETITION, TOO!  THE 1967 AND 1969 YEARBOOKS HIGHLIGHT  EXCELLENCE IN BOTH FIELDS....
