I LOVE MY FAMILY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE: CHARLES ROY SANDERS, PART 6: HALLOWEEN TO HOT PANTS!!

OCTOBER 31, 1970 WAS A DAY OF SURPRISES AND FUN FOR ALL OF US
AT L.C. ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL!!
THE PICTURES  BELOW SHOWS CHARLES AND I, AS WELL AS , MY BEST FRIEND, JEANETTE GOODEN; AS SOPHOMORES IN THE 1969 YEARBOOK;

BUT, BY OCTOBER 1970, WE WERE SENIORS; AND LOOKING FORWARD TO GRADUATION IN JUNE 1971.  AT SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD (17 YEARS); WE WERE GOING THROUGH SOME SAD TIMES BECAUSE OUR SCHOOL WAS CLOSING; BUT, THE ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY, AND STAFF MADE A VERY SPECIAL EFFORT TO MAKE SURE OUR LAST YEAR WAS A FANTASTIC ONE!!!  BY OCTOBER 31ST, THE SCHOOL CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES HAD BEEN GOING ON SMOOTHLY; THE FUN AND EXCITEMENT OF THE FOOTBALL SEASON WAS IN FULL FLOW, AND WE WERE HAVING A GREAT YEAR!
THAT HALLOWEEN DAY, WE WERE SCHEDULED TO  HAVE PARTIES IN OUR HOMEROOMS THAT AFTERNOON; BUT, WE ALSO HAD A SPECIAL TREAT SET FOR THE DAY...AN ALL-SCHOOL ASSEMBLY WHICH WAS SPONSORED BY THE DRAMA CLUB....AN EXCELLENT HALLOWEEN PLAY....ONE IN WHICH MY BEST FRIEND, JEANETTE, WAS GOING TO PERFORM....
SO, SHE AND I WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PLAY!

HOWEVER, WE WERE ESPECIALLY EXCITED ABOUT PLANS FOR THAT NIGHT!  THE DRAMA TEACHER HAD INVITED THE WHOLE DRAMA CLUB; ABOUT 20 STUDENTS, TO COME BACK TO SCHOOL AT 6 PM AND MEET HER FOR A SPECIAL SUCCESSFUL  PLAY CELEBRATION
-

A HALLOWEEN HAYRIDE AND PARTY!

EACH STUDENT WAS ENCOURAGED TO INVITE ONE GUEST; AND, JEANETTE HAD INVITED ME!!  I REMEMBER HOW EXCITED I WAS TO GO BECAUSE MY PARENTS DIDN'T ALLOW ME TO GO TO "HOUSE PARTIES";  ONLY TO ORGANIZED; SUPERVISED SCHOOL EVENTS.   BUT, THEY AGREED TO LET ME GO BECAUSE IT WAS BEING HELD AND SUPERVISED BY A TEACHER WE ALL LIKED AND TRUSTED (I AM SORRY I CAN'T REMEMBER HER NAME RIGHT NOW AND I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND OUR 1970 YEARBOOK TO FIND HER); BUT, SHE WAS A WHITE TEACHER; WHO HAD RECENTLY JOINED OUR FACULTY, AND REORGANIZED THE DRAMA DEPT.  WHEN I FIND THE YEARBOOK, I WILL DEFINITELY FEATURE HER IN MY POST).

SHE LIVED IN WHAT WE CALLED "THE COUNTRY"...AN AREA ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF AUSTIN...IF I WAS TO GUESS, I WOULD SAY IT WAS PROBABLY IN "WEBBERVILLE, TEXAS"  BECAUSE I REMEMBER WE DROVE DOWN WHAT WAS THEN NAMED "19TH STREET"...WHICH WAS LATER RENAMED "MARTIN L. KING BLVD"...FOR ABOUT FIVE MILES OUTSIDE OF THE CITY LIMITS...IT WASN'T FAR; BUT, VERY UNDEVELOPED AT THE TIME...SO IT WAS LIKE GOING ON AN ADVENTURE.  WE ALL WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO TAKING OUR FIRST "HAYRIDE" ...YOU SEE, EVEN THOUGH WE ARE TEXAS NATIVES; MOST OF US HAD NEVER LIVED ON OR BEEN TO A FARM...SO, JUST BEING IN THAT ENVIRONMENT WAS FUN AND INTERESTING! THEREFORE, JEANETTE AND I HAD PLANS TO ENJOY THE HAYRIDE AND PARTY LATER; BUT, HAD NOT ANTICIPATED THE SURPRISES WHICH HAPPENED EARLIER THAT DAY!
FIRST OF ALL,  JEANETTE HAD TALKED ABOUT HOW EXCITED SHE WAS ABOUT BEING IN THE PLAY; SO, I COULDN'T WAIT TO SEE HER PERFORM!  HOWEVER, I BELIEVE I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY THE PERFORMANCE OF ANOTHER ACTOR IN THE PLAY....
CHARLES ROY SANDERS! FOR SOME REASON, HIS ROLE IN THE PLAY WAS AN "IMPORTANT" ENOUGH ONE THAT HE REALLY STOOD OUT...HE WAS GOOD AND FUNNY...AND, I HAD TO ADMIT, LOOKED QUITE HANDSOME THAT DAY....I ASKED JEANETTE WHO HE WAS...SHE WAS SURPRISED THAT I HADN'T NOTICED HIM BEFORE BECAUSE WE HAD GONE TO THE SAME SCHOOL SINCE THE EIGHTH (8TH) GRADE AT KEALING; AND, THEN, SHE TOLD ME SOMETHING I AM EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT...SHE TOLD ME HE WAS THE "CAPTAIN"  OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM WHOM  I RAN OUT ON THE FIELD WITH AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAMES, AS "CAPTAIN" OF THE CHEERLEADERS!!  I HAD TO ADMIT I HAD NEVER LOOKED AT WHO WAS UNDER THAT HELMET (SMILE); I JUST GRABBED HIS HAND AS THE TEAM RAN OUT OF THE LOCKER ROOM, AND RAN HIM INTO THE GAME POSTER BETWEEN THE GOALS...I NEVER LOOKED TO SEE WHO HE WAS...JEANETTE AND I HAD A BIG LAUGH ABOUT THAT; AND,  I ADMIT I MADE A MENTAL NOTE TO NOTICE HIM THE NEXT GAME!!  LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT I WOULD RUN INTO HIM BEFORE THE NEXT GAME!  SO, JEANETTE AND I WENT TO CHEERLEADER PRACTICE AFTER THE PLAY; AND, PLANNED WHAT WE WOULD WEAR FOR THE PARTY THAT NIGHT!!
OUR TEACHER'S HOUSE WAS DECORATED IN A REALLY COOL AND CREEPY WAY (ALMOST AS COOL AS THIS) AND SHE HAD
"SPECIAL FOOD AND DRINK TREATS" FOR ALL!! WE HAD A FANTASTIC TIME ON THE HAYRIDE OUT THERE AND THE PARTY WAS GOING STRONG AS WE WANDERED IN AND OUT OF THE HOUSE; AS WELL AS,  AROUND HER HUGE LOT OF BEAUTIFUL PLANTS AND TREES!!  HOWEVER, THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT FOR ME WAS WHEN I WENT INTO THE HOUSE TO GET ANOTHER DRINK\
AND SITTING IN A HUGE LOUNGE CHAIR IN THE LIVINGROOM WAS CHARLES AND SOME OTHER STUDENTS LISTENING TO MUSIC.
..HE LOOKED UP AT ME WHEN I CAME TO THROUGH THE DOOR; AND, OUR EYES MET FOR THE FIRST TIME REALLY....HE SMILED...I SMILED AND TOLD HIM HOW WELL I THOUGHT HE HAD DONE IN THE PLAY...OUR CONVERSATION WENT ON FOR THERE....IT SEEMED TO LAST FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE PARTY...ALL I KNOW IS AND REMEMBER IS THAT "I WALKED IN WITH ONE TRUE FRIEND....JEANETTE....BUT, I LEFT WITH MEMORIES OF MEETING A "NEW FRIEND"....THIS WAS THE NIGHT OUR FRIENDSHIP REALLY BEGAN ON OCTOBER 31ST....HALLOWEEN NIGHT...1970...

I GAVE HIM MY PHONE NUMBER THAT NIGHT...OUR SENIOR YEAR AT L.C. ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL CHANGED FOR BOTH OF US FROM THAT NIGHT
*********************************************************************************
NOVEMBER 1970 BROUGHT  FAMILY INTRODUCTIONS....TRIPS TO MOUNT BONNELL AND OTHER  BEAUTIFUL HILL AND LAKE VIEWS...VISITS TO AUSTIN'S HISTORIC SITES....DINNERS AT LONGHORN STEAKHOUSE AND EL MATAMORAS, TWO OF OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS FOR DATES...AND THANKSGIVING CELEBRATIONS WITH BOTH FAMILIES AND FRIENDS...A SPECTACULAR BEGINNING TO A NEW LIFE TOGETHER....
DECEMBER 1970 WAS TRULY UNFORGETTABLE...CHARLES SURPRISED ME WITH A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS GIFT - THE LATEST FABULOUS FASHION TREND - A BLUE VELVET HOT PANTS SET WITH MATCHING BLUE SUEDE BOOTS THAT LOOKED A LOT LIKE THIS OUTFIT....
I GOT RAVE REVIEWS FROM ALL MY FRIENDS WHEN I RETURNED TO SCHOOL AFTER THE "CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS WINTER BREAK -  SPORTING MY NEW OUTFIT ON THE ARMS OF MY NEW MAN!!!
