Last Surviving Signer of Texas Declaration of Independence Dies




On this day in 1895, William Carroll Crawford, Sr., the last surviving signer of the Texas

Declaration of Independence, died while visiting his son in Dublin in Erath County.


Crawford, a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina
, moved to Texas in

1835 and settled
near Shelbyville in Shelby County .



He and Sydney O. Pennington (Penington)

represented Shelby County at the Convention of 1836,

which wrote the Declaration of Independence


and the Constitution Image result of the Republic of


Texas and established the ad interim government. Crawford, who later lived in Camp, Hill,

and Johnson counties, died ten days before his ninety-first birthday.

On 3 May 1834 when William Carrol was 29, he married Rhoda Jackson Watkins, daughter of (Private) & (Private), in Talladega Co., AL.2,3 Born on 11 Jan 1816 in Murfreeboro, Rutherford Co, TN. Rhoda Jackson died in Pittsburg, Camp Co., TX, on 18 Jan 1881; she was 65.2
