ANCESTRY ANTHOLOGY: BLACK HISTORY/CULTURE: SPECIAL TRIBUTE-P2: "BILLY HARDEN - L. C. ANDERSON HIGH…

DR. BILLY HARDEN

THE VIDEO BELOW WAS PART OF A SERIES OF INTERVIEWS, CONDUCTED BY BRUCE BLACKWELL, OF FORMER STUDENTS OF THE ORIGINAL L.C. ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL IN AUSTIN, TEXAS...I WAS ALSO THERE AT THE SAME TIME; AND, IT WAS TRULY  "ENTRANCING' TO BE REMINDED OF THOSE DAYS...

BILLY EXPLAINS THAT HE ENDED UP THERE BECAUSE THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAD DECIDED TO OFFER THEIR FIRST (1ST) "TECHNOLOGY CLASS AT ANDERSON, INSTEAD OF THE PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED,  AUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL, IN AN ATTEMPT TO PERSUADE "WHITE" STUDENTS TO ATTEND ANDERSON, AND, MAYBE AVOID THE CLOSING OF THE HISTORICAL, AND; AS HE MENTIONED, OUTSTANDING, SCHOOL WHICH PROVIDED MUCH MORE THAN AN EDUCATION TO THE STUDENTS, THEIR PARENTS; AND, THE WHOLE BLACK COMMUNITY.

BUT,  HE NOTES THAT ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL ALSO SERVED AS ONE OF TWO OF THE MAJOR POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL COMPONENTS WHICH HELD THE WHOLE BLACK COMMUNITY IN EAST AUSTIN; WHETHER THEY ATTENDED ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL OR NOT...TOGETHER!!

OF COURSE, THE BLACK CHURCHES WERE THE OTHER MAJOR COMPONENT; AND, FORTUNATELY, THEY CONTINUE TO BE WHAT HOLDS US TOGETHER TODAY...YOU CANNOT TURN A CORNER IN EAST AUSTIN WITHOUT FINDING A CHURCH IN EAST AUSTIN...SOMETHING WHICH IS RARELY  MENTIONED IN LOCAL NEWS...

BILLY WAS AN EXCELLENT MUSICIAN....ONE OF THE INSTRUMENTS HE PLAYED WAS A CHURCH ORGAN!!!  WE WILL ALL MISS HIM SO VERY MUCH...OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WAS AN ENVIRONMENT OF LOVE, JOY, GUIDANCE, AND SUPPORT FOR ALL THE CHILDREN BLESSED TO GROW UP THERE; AND, BILLY WAS DEFINITELY A "LEADER OF THE PACK" FROM THE VERY BEGINNING....OF THE OTHER YOUNG MEN....BILLY, HIS BROTHER, ROOSEVELT,  AND MY BROTHER, OTIS SMITH, JR., WERE VERY CLOSE FRIENDS IN OUR CHILDHOOD; AND, IT WAS HIS POST TO FACEBOOK WHICH WAS THE FIRST TIME I HEARD ABOUT BILLY'S DEATH.

I WILL SHARE SOME OF THE EXPERIENCES BILLY, AND ALL OF US,  ENJOYED FROM OUR LAST YEAR AT  "THE ORIGINAL L. C. ANDERSON HIGH SCHOOL"

IN THE COMING DAYS OF APRIL IN TRIBUTE TO

MY FRIEND, DR. BILLY F.  HARDEN!!
